Preserving our heritage

PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE

In June 2011 we had the wonderful opportunity of gathering the top youth leaders and Chaplains from around the Province at the annual Provincial Youth Council Consultation hosted by the Diocese of Falsebay.  One of our activities was to take the delegates on a visit of Bishopscourt and St George’s Cathedral.  For many this was the highlight of their stay in Cape Town and there were many expressions of delight in being able to visit these very important heritage sites.

It was also incidental that we were at Bishopscourt the same day the Fire Department was attending to a fire scare and a number of the young leaders expressed their concern about the state of the buildings.  This feeling was further exacerbated after visiting St George’s Cathedral where they learnt of the state of the roof that was in desperate need of repair.

Our immediate response was to offer our help with ladders, paint brushes and hammers, but as the Provincial Executive Officer so rightly pointed out, that these buildings form part of our heritage sites and would require specialist help in remedying the problem.

Provincial Youth Council, then, deliberated on this issue and have come up with the proposal to raise some money towards the restoration of these buildings and in the process, to also raise some money for the training and development of youth leaders to strengthen and bolster the ministry to the young people in the Province.

The Concept and Challenge

We are going to use the Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday 11th March 2012 as our means to raise some funds and we invite all the Anglican riders to help us, through sponsorships, to raise at least R200000.00.

If you have registered to ride in the Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour next year, then we encourage you to let us have your details and Race number.  We will send you an official  sponsorship form on which you may collect sponsorships.  In addition to collecting sponsors on your list, we will list you on our web site where anybody can sponsor any of the riders through an electronic sponsorship.  That means you will be able to raise more sponsorships than what you have collected on your sponsorship form.

Sponsors sponsor R1.00 per kilometre (the race is about 110 kms long) and this amounts to R110.00 per sponsor.  Sponsors can also sponsor multiples of R1.00 per km.  It would be nice if some of the sponsors can sponsor R5.00 or even R10.00 per km!!  Some fantastic prizes will be offered for those riders who raise the most money in their age groups.

The final proceeds will be split 50/50 between the Cathedral Roof restoration fund and Provincial Youth Council Young Leaders Development and Training Fund.  In this way we will be able to make a difference immediately in the roof restoration project, and at the same time, to develop leaders who will ensure that our heritage is preserved for generations to come.  More information about how you can get involved is listed on our web site at www.aysa.org.za.
